Last October, Rob and I were fortunate to meet you at the wedding fare at Ye Olde
Plough House in Bulphan. As we passed by, your cheery face drew us to you and
you asked us if we had set a date for our wedding. Having just returned from our
holiday (where Rob had proposed) we said that we would like to get married some
time in either August/September 2008 but hadn't set a firm date as yet. You
whipped out your diary and jokingly told us that if we wanted to book you as our
Toastmaster, we would need to act fast as you had very few dates remaining during
those months where you were available.
We then got in to a conversation with you where you and Rob exchanged stories of
your days playing rugby-etc and you had us in fits of laughter. We wanted to you
immediately - so much so, that when we spoke to the banqueting team at Ye Olde
Plough House, and they told us we could hire the Monks Barn on Friday 26'1'
September, our faces lit up as that was one of the few days that you were available.
Whilst I stood and handed over details to the banqueting team, Rob ran back to you
and we booked you on the spot!
During the run up to the wedding, you asked us to complete forms with our
personal details, that gave you information about the main bridal party, but you also
asked if we had any guests that would need special care or help on the big day.
How thoughtful was that?
Then a few weeks before the wedding, we met to run through everything, refreshing
and updating our requirements as we saw fit.
You brought some helpful guidance notes for the men required to make speeches e.g.
Father of the Bride, Best Men and of course the Bridegroom himself, as well as giving
us a couple of options for grace and asking if we had remembered to include a toast
to 'absent family and friends'. It was then that we gave you the sad news that my
Nan had suddenly, and unexpectedly, died 5 months previous. You very kindly
proffered to make a toast to her on our behalf, but at the time, I found it very difficult
and asked you not to include anything in your speech. You did ask me to take some
time to reflect and even suggested that Rob could include this special toast in his
speech instead. I am glad that we followed your advice - Rob's toast to Nan
was lovely and it is something that my grandfather cherished.
We really cannot thank you enough for all that you did for us leading up to the
wedding, but most importantly, all that you did to make the day run smoothly. You
carried my handbag (and was very comfortable doing so !), replenished our
champagne glasses between photos, kept everyone in order and running to time, but
most of all Ted our family and friends loved you. Even now, they are still talking
about you - the jokes that you shared with them, the stories that you told at their
tables etc.
It's funny how some people leave lasting impressions. As you know, Rob's Mum
suffers with infracted dementia which often sees her losing her train of thought or
not being able to remember much - even if it was only a few minutes ago. When
talking to her on the phone the other evening, she asked Rob 'if he had seen the man
in the red coat lately' !!!
So as you can see Ted, you struck a big chord with us and if anyone was to ask if it
was worth booking a Toastmaster, we would tell them it is essential and then pass
them your phone number.
Once again Ted, thank you for helping us to have the best day of our lives.
Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas, and a healthy, happy and
prosperous New Year.
With warm regards "

Ted Prior officiated as toastmaster at our venue on 16th July 2005 for a combined wedding ceremony and reception. He did so extremely competently and with a pleasing manner, which made him very popular with both the Hop Farm staff and the Bridal party. We were all very pleased with the way he conducted himself on the day, being friendly, helpful and extremely professional, and we will be delighted to welcome him here to officiate again in the future.
